The Coe College Festival of Bands 

Traditionally held each year in April, Coe's Festival of Bands brings a major guest conductor to campus to assist in the celebration of the many facets of band music.

The Guest Artists

David Shaffer

David

David Shaffer holds a Bachelor Degree from The Ohio State University and a Master of Music Degree from Miami University (Ohio).   Mr. Shaffer has taught in the Hamilton, Ohio; Northridge, Ohio; and Wyoming, Ohio schools.  Mr. Shaffer has been associated with the Miami University Marching Band for 30 years as Graduate Assistant Director (1978-80), Assistant Director (1980-97) and has been the Director for more than a decade. In 2003 the Miami Band performed as the “Santa Band” in the 77th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

Mr. Shaffer has over 250 compositions and arrangements in print. His compositions have been used at clinics and music festivals around the world and have been placed on contest required-performance lists in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia. 

Mr. Shaffer is in demand as a conductor for new music reading clinics, music festivals, and music education seminars, including three appearances at the Midwest Clinic.  In February of 1997 he conducted a program of his music, with the China Youth Corps Band in the National Concert Hall, Taipei, Taiwan.  We welcome Mr. Shaffer, who shared the Festival of Bands spotlight with David Holsinger in 2005, back to Coe College.

Ted Vives

Ted ATed Vives is the musical director of the Los Alamos Community Winds, which in 2012 was awarded Second Place for the American Prize - Community Band Division.

Vives holds bachelor’s degrees in both composition and music education from Florida State University and a Masters of Music in Composition and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Florida. He has taught in the public schools in Florida and has served as a clinician at band and music camps in many states. His marching and concert band arrangements have been performed nationwide. In 2003 and 2010 he was selected as the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico's (Music Teachers National Association State Affiliate) Commissioned Composer.

Dr. Vives is the winner of the 2011 American Prize in Composition (Choral Division), and his compositions and arrangements are published by Manduca Music Publications and Survives Music.


The Festival Concerts

On Saturday, April 20, at 8:00 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium, David Shaffer  will conduct the Coe College Concert Band in several of his own compositions, and Ted A. Vives will conduct two pieces, including his own arrangement of the accompaniment for the Bugs Bunny cartoon, "What's Opera, Doc?"  Shaffer  will also work with the Elementary Honor Bands, which will perform at 4:00 p.m. that day and with the Coe Junior and Senior Honor Bands, who will present their Festival concert on Sunday, April 21, at 4:00 p.m.  Also featured during the Festival, on Friday, April 19, at 7:30, will be a free concert by the Kirkwood Community College Concert Band, directed by Dr. Beth Zamzow, and the New Horizons Band of Cedar Rapids, conducted by Alan Lawrence. Tickets for the Honor Band concerts will be available through the Coe College Box Office (319-399-8600) and tickets for the Coe College Concert Band performance will be available at the door.

The Coe College Festival of Bands, under the administration of Dr. Carson, was established in 1994 and has featured a number of respected composers and conductors:
